Travelling with Pets.
1. Legal Requirements (SENASAG - Bolivia)
According to the General Animal Health Regulation (REGENSA, updated August 2022), the process for companion animals is streamlined. It does not require formal import procedures or power of attorney.
Mandatory Documentation:
International Zoosanitary Export Certificate: Must be issued by the official animal health authority of the country of origin. A separate certificate is required for each pet.
European Exception: European pet passports are valid and serve as a substitute for the zoosanitary certificate (Ref. Page 245, Chap. 7.1).
Sanitary Requirements (Ref. Pages 252–253, Chap. 7.3):
Age: Minimum of 3 months old.
Vaccination: Current Rabies vaccine (administered at least 14 days prior to travel).
Deworming: Recent internal and external treatment (specific application dates must be listed).
Health Status: The certificate must attest to the animal's general good health and the absence of communicable diseases.
Note: No quarantine is required upon arrival, provided the documentary verification at the point of entry is successful.
2. Airline Policy Comparison
Staff must coordinate with their airline at least 48 hours prior to the flight.
American Airlines:
Max. Cabin Weight: 9.07 kg (pet + carrier)
Advance Notice: Minimum 48 hours
Cabin Fee: Approx. USD 150
Vet Certificate: Must be issued within 10 days before the flight
Checked Kennel: Available for active-duty Military personnel only
Brachycephalic Breeds: Not allowed in cargo.
Avianca:
Max. Cabin Weight: 10 kg (pet + carrier)
Advance Notice: Minimum 48 hours
Cabin Fee: Varies by route
Vet Certificate: Validity depends on country of origin
Checked Kennel: Available (up to 70 kg including kennel)
Brachycephalic Breeds: Cabin only (if weight ≤ 10 kg)
